At Southwest Georgia Technical College, we believe a strong foundation and introduction to the College environment are key factors to a student’s success.
In order to help our students be successful, we require all new students to participate in New Student Orientation. Orientation is held at our main and Mitchell County campuses at the beginning of every quarter. Students will meet several members of our staff, including administration and financial aid representatives, as well as program advisors and instructors. Student Affairs staff will present information on resources and programs available to students, including counseling, career placement, and student success resources. Students will learn about various policies and procedures important to their success. Information on student activities and upcoming events will also be shared.
As a part of orientation on our main campus, students will take part in the “SWGTC Amazing Race.” This fun and interactive activity gives students a chance to see our campus and meet members of the faculty and staff. Previous participants in the “Amazing Race” have said they felt much more confident about starting their classes after taking part in this activity.
We try to make New Student Orientation as fun and interactive as possible, while sharing lots of important information with new students. Day and evening sessions are offered, each lasting approximately two and a half hours. All participants receive a copy of the SWGTC Catalog/Student Handbook, a t-shirt, Student Planner, and lots of other information. Food and drinks as well as door prizes are also available.
Once students start their programs, they will undergo the second phase of the orientation process. This is conducted by the program instructors. Safety rules, policies and procedures specific to the program of study will be discussed.
For students who are unable to attend New Student Orientation on campus, an online version is available.
