Types of Gifts

The SWGTC Foundation accepts many different types of gifts that will improve the quality of education for our students. Such gifts include:

  • cash
  • stocks
  • bonds
  • real estate
  • bequests
  • personal property

Other types of gifts must be approved by the Board of Trustees before the Foundation can accept them. If you have a question about a gift, please call the Office of Institutional Advancement at 229-225-3977.

Planned Gifting

A planned gift is a philanthropic gift and legacy that is funded either during the donor’s lifetime or after the donor’s death. The gift is part of a larger estate-planning process in which the donor decides how certain assets are distributed. Planned gifts create opportunities for both the Southwest Georgia Technical College Foundation and our donors. Determining what gift is right for you is just as important as making the gift.

Benefits
  • Total income, estate, and capital gains tax savings and the probate expense savings.
  • Satisfaction that you have contributed the success of SWGTC and its students.

Ways to Plan Gifting

Bequests

Bequests through a will may be beneficial to donors who wish to make a gift without diminishing available assets during their lifetime. Various forms of bequests include a specified dollar amount, a percentage of estate value, a gift from the residual of the estate or a gift of specific property.

Life Insurance

A gift of life insurance can be as simple as making the SWGTC Foundation the beneficiary of a policy. By making the SWGTC Foundation owner and beneficiary, a donor may receive tax benefits.

Retained Life Estates

With a retained life estate, a donor can transfer ownership of property, such as a personal residence or farm, to the SWGTC Foundation while retaining the right to use the property during his or her lifetime. An immediate tax deduction is allowed for the value of the eventual charitable gift.

Qualified Retirement Plans

Assets in a qualified retirement plan such as an IRA, a 401(k), or a Keogh are typically included as part of the taxable estate at death. To minimize estate taxes, a donor could select the SWGTC Foundation as the beneficiary of remaining retirement assets at the time of death.

If you are interested in planned gifting, please contact your attorney, accountant, financial advisor or the Office of Institutional Advancement at 229-225-3977.

How Your Donation Is Used

Adult Education Scholarships
The SWGTC Foundation encourages students to get their GED by paying for testing and other incurred fees.

Student Enabling Scholarships
The Student Enabling Scholarship is a need-based scholarship designed to help students with unexpected expenses that may prevent them from continuing their education.

Merit-Based Scholarships
The SWGTC Foundation has 16 established scholarships. These scholarships are based on merit and funded by your donations.

High School Scholarships
Each year the SWGTC Foundation awards one graduating high school senior from each area high school with a scholarship to be used upon their enrollment at SWGTC.

Employee Scholarships
At SWGTC, we believe that in order to give the best education possible to each of our students, our faculty and staff must also have the best education available. The SWGTC Employee Scholarship provides assistance to employees working toward a bachelor, masters, or doctoral degree.

Equipment & Technology
Business, industry and our medical community rely upon employees trained on state-of-the-art equipment and industry-standard technology. The SWGTC Foundation provides funding to insure that the students of SWGTC have access to the technology and equipment that is vital to their educational experience.

Facility Renovations
The SWGTC Foundation aids the College in the expense associated with facility renovations and maintaining our college campus.

Matching Gift Programs

Many companies participate in matching gifts programs. We encourage all community partners to check with your organization to see if your donation qualifies for a corporate match, which will effectively double of your contribution!

Tax Deductible

Southwest Georgia Technical College Foundation is a 501(c) 3 corporation. Contributions are tax deductible.
