Southwest Georgia Technical College Gears Up for 6th Annual Golf Tournament

SWGTC President, Dr. Glenn Deibert, tees off in last year's tournament. The Southwest Georgia Technical College’s Foundation Board of Trustees is getting ready to tee off their 6th annual Golf Tournament at Glen Arven Country Club. Scheduled for May 19th, the tournament is a four person Ft. Lauderdale Scramble with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and is a fundraiser to provide high-quality education and lifelong learning from the residents of Thomas, Grady, and Mitchell Counties.

“The tournament is a major fundraiser for our Foundation and generates much of the funds we need for equipment purchases and student scholarships,” said SWGTC President Dr. Glenn Deibert. “The support we receive from the community for this effort goes a long way to rewarding some of our most exceptional and deserving students with much needed financial assistance, which allows them to meet their educational goals.”

Funds raised by the tournament are used to provide not only scholarships, but also emergency assistance for students, new equipment purchases and technical upgrades for the tutoring center and on-line education and E-Learning.  Among the programs benefiting from this year’s tournament are nursing, criminal justice technology, welding, automotive technology, surgical technology, and respiratory technology. The Grady County Campus construction effort will also benefit.  More than $650,000 in technology upgrades have been provided by the Foundation since 1999 and more than 275 students have received financial assistance due to its fundraising efforts.

There are several levels of sponsorship opportunities for local businesses and individuals. “This is a wonderful opportunity to aid our entire community by supporting technical education,” Deibert said.

Participants have several chances to win prizes during the tournament including a new car, sponsored by Roy Campbell Chevrolet, for a hole-in-one on hole #13. Other prizes include gift certificates from the Pro Shop at Glen Arven Country Club and special gifts for closet to the pin shots on all par 3 holes and longest drive on a par 5 hole. There will also be goodie bags for all participants and numerous drawings for prizes. “Our most popular raffle prize, the smoker, that is constructed by our Welding program, will also be available again this year,” said Deibert.
