Southwest Georgia Technical College has recently launched its mobile website, which allows students to access critical information quickly and easily from any Smartphone (BlackBerry, Droid, iPhone).SWGTC is the first college in the Technical College System of Georgia to launch such a website.

The “mobile web” refers to the use of Internet-connected applications, or browser-based access to the Internet from a mobile device - such as a Smartphone or tablet personal computer- connected to a wireless network.

The mobile website is an abridged version on SWGTC’s official website, which makes accessing information easier for students using cell phones. “It can be very difficult to navigate traditional websites from a cell phone, because they are not designed to be viewed in that way,” said Ryan Jorge, a SWGTC Computer Information Networking Systems student who designed the mobile website.

“By starting with a mobile website you can make sure that the first time someone types in your URL from their mobile device, they are immediately detected as a mobile channel user and redirected to a mobile-optimized experience — or even better to a device-optimized experience,” said Jorge.

“This approach removes the barriers of entry because it doesn’t force your users to download an application before interacting with your brand AND can still serve a device-optimized experience to your users,” said Jorge.

SWGTC students may now access information on the College’s website such as campus calendar, maps, schedules, class assignments, financial aid, and contacts much easier than before.

Jorge approached SWGTC administrators about creating a mobile website after encountering problems accessing other websites from his BlackBerry. “It is frustrating to have problems getting information you need from websites that are not designed for mobile access,” he said.

“Sheryl Sealy, Director of Institutional Advancement, says that she was impressed with Jorge’s initiative and desire to move forward with this project. “Ryan did a fantastic job working with us to create this mobile website. We are living in a world where so many of us use Smartphones on a daily basis, so it only made sense to be proactive and create a site for our students that would make it easier for them to get what they needed from our website,” she said.

The mobile website pares down the information and eliminates photos and other parts of traditional websites that make viewing them difficult from a cell phone.

“This mobile website allows students to access Banner and Angel programs, which will make it possible for them to check grades and transcripts, register for classes, receive any news or alerts, and even apply for financial aid right from their Smartphone,” Jorge said.

““If you try to connect to our regular website from a Smartphone, you will be immediately redirected to our mobile website,” said Jorge. “This makes it so much easier to navigate the site and get needed information more quickly.”
