High School students who are Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club members from Bishop Hall Charter School, Mitchell County High School, and Cairo High School FBLA chapters recently participated in FBLA and PBL Day hosted by Phi Beta Lambda at Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC).
The purpose of the event was to allow the students to network with each other and learn professional enhancement skills. “We want the students to learn leadership skills and also how to work together as a team,” said PBL advisor Carol Peppers. “PBL is the college equivalent of FBLA and we have this event every year so that PBL members can help mentor high school students in FBLA.”
SWGTC Vice President for Economic Development Gary Pitts presented the students with a mini-course in CPR methods and SWGTC Management and Supervisory Development instructor and PBL lead advisor Neil Clements led the group in team-building exercises. The students also wrote and performed their own original skits to demonstrate ethics and positive characteristics under the guidance of PBL members.
PBL President Ryan Jorge said, “The event went very well and it was a lot of fun for us to meet and interact with the students. They were a great group to work with. They had a lot of enthusiasm and were very receptive to the information that was presented to them.”
According to Peppers, the event was an overwhelming success. “We were very pleased with how things went and afterwards many of the students said they had decided to enroll at Southwest Georgia Technical College after graduation. They were impressed with what they saw and heard while on our campus. We are always happy to have these groups visit the campus.”
